Discourse Relations Versus Discourse Marker Relations

چکیده
While it seems intuitively obvious tha t many discourse markers (DMs) are able to express discourse relat ions (DRs) which ex i s t independently, the specific contr ibut ion of DMs if any is not clear. In this paper , we investigate the s tatus of some consequence DMs in French. We observe tha t it is difficult to cons t ruc t a clear and simple definition based on DRs for these DMs. Next , we show tha t the lexical constraints associated with such DMs extend far beyond simple compat ibi l i ty with DRs. This suggests t ha t the view of DMs as signaling general al lpurpose DRs is to be seriously amended in favor of more precise descriptions of DMs, in which the compat ibi l i ty with DRs is derived from a lexical semantic profile.

On the Information Conveyed by Discourse Markers
Discourse connectives play an important role in making a text coherent and helping humans to infer relations between spans of text. Using the Penn Discourse Treebank, we investigate what information relevant to inferring discourse relations is conveyed by discourse connectives, and whether the specificity of discourse relations reflects general cognitive biases for establishing coherence. We al...

متن کاملReliable Discourse Markers for Contrast Relations
Using the RST annotated corpus (Carlson et al., 2003), we use simple statistics on the distribution of discourse markers or cue phrases as evidence of the three-way distinction of Contrast relations, Contrast, Antithesis and Concession, recognized in standard Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST, Mann & Thompson 1987). We also show that however, an intuitive marker of Contrast, is not actually used...
متن کاملFactors Influencing the Implicitation of Discourse Relations across Languages
Relations that hold between discourse segments can, but need not, be made explicit by means of discourse connectives. Even though the explicit signaling of discourse relations is optional, not all relations can be easily conveyed implicitly. It has been proposed that readers and listeners have certain expectations about discourse and that discourse relations that are in line with these expectat...
متن کاملLexical Models to Identify Unmarked Discourse Relations: Does WordNet help?
In this paper, we address the task of automatically determining which discourse relation holds between two text spans. We focus on relations that are not explicitly signalled by a discourse marker like but. While lexical models have been found useful for the task, they are also prone to data sparseness problems, which is a big drawback given the scarcity of discourse annotated data. We therefor...
متن کاملExploiting Discourse Relations for Sentiment Analysis
The overall sentiment of a text is critically affected by its discourse structure. By splitting a text into text spans with different discourse relations, we automatically train the weights of different relations in accordance with their importance, and then make use of discourse structure knowledge to improve sentiment classification. In this paper, we utilize explicit connectives to predict d...
